DoorDash adds text ordering, drone tests and a nationwide returns rollout

The company is widening Ask DoorDash, starting drone pilots in northern California and extending returns across the U.S. in November.

DoorDash is adding three new services that could matter for merchants and customers: text-based AI ordering, drone delivery, and a broader retail returns program. The text ordering feature extends Ask DoorDash and is starting as a U.S. iOS beta waitlist, while Android support and a full launch timing have not been announced. DoorDash Air will begin pilot testing in northern California with partners including Chipotle and Popeyes, but the company has not said when consumers can actually use it. Its returns service, already in select cities at $7.99 per pickup, will expand nationwide in November and lets couriers collect eligible items from a customer’s door and take them back to the retailer.

Why it matters

These changes widen the ways people can use DoorDash beyond food delivery. Customers get a simpler way to reorder, a returns option that does not need a box or label, and a service that could move from limited tests into broader use. Merchants and retail partners also gain a new channel for pickup and return handling.
