Fake WhatsApp clone appears above the real app in Google Play search

The sponsored listing can steer users to an impostor before they reach the official messenger, and the clone may also be limiting public review warnings.

A fake WhatsApp app has been appearing above the legitimate one in Google Play search results as a sponsored listing, which makes it easier for users to install an impostor instead of the real messenger. The clone has reportedly passed 500,000 downloads and is still live in the store. It comes from a developer named “Agment Assets sallu” and copies the official app’s icon, screenshots, and description, while the real WhatsApp shows more than 10 billion downloads and over 246 million reviews. Android Authority says the clone may be using Google Play’s Early Access program to hide public reviews, which would reduce users’ ability to warn others.

Why it matters

This changes how easily users can be misled at the moment they search for WhatsApp. A copy that looks official, has already drawn more than 500,000 downloads and may hide reviews makes it harder for people to spot and flag a bad listing before installing it. It also shows how store ranking and review controls can be used to give a fake app more credibility than the real one should need.
