Russian man detained in probe into London hospital cyberattack

The case raises the stakes around hospital ransomware by tying the attack to a patient death and more than 10,000 disrupted appointments.

German police have detained a 28-year-old Russian man, Vladimir K., and are now treating the 2024 Synnovis hospital hack as part of their case, while UK investigators are also weighing whether the aftermath could support an unlawful killing probe. The attack on the blood-testing provider disrupted pathology work across London, forced cancellations and diversions, and was later linked by King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to the unexpected death of one patient. Investigators say the incident shut down or delayed more than 10,000 appointments and ended with stolen patient data being published online after the ransom demand was refused. K. is described as a core member of the Qilin gang, which German officials say has hit more than 4,000 organisations and extorted more than $140m since 2024. He was arrested in Japan in May while on holiday and is wanted in Germany over a separate logistics-company intrusion in September 2024.

Why it matters

For hospitals and patients, the case turns a major cyberattack into a wider criminal investigation with possible manslaughter scrutiny. It shows how a breach that hit clinical systems can spill into patient harm, while German authorities are also linking the suspect to a wider ransomware group and another alleged hack.
