Gemini now lets users create, preview and edit files inside the chat
Documents, PDFs and spreadsheets can be revised through conversation, with PDFs supported on both web and mobile and other formats limited to the web.
Google has rolled out in-chat file creation and editing for its Gemini app, so users can now generate, preview and modify documents without leaving the conversation. Users can open a file full screen to type changes directly, highlight a passage to ask questions or request edits, and have Gemini revise the content. PDF preview and editing work on both web and mobile, while Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code files are limited to the web for now. The feature is available to all Gemini app users in every language the app supports. For developers and founders, it means a generate-then-refine workflow can stay inside a single chat rather than moving into separate document tools.
Why it matters
Users no longer need to move between a chat assistant and separate document tools to produce and refine a file. Editing can happen by typing directly in a full-screen view, by highlighting a passage to ask for changes, or by asking Gemini to revise the content. Because the feature is open to all Gemini app users in every supported language, the same generate-then-refine pattern is now available to a broad audience. Anthropic has offered a comparable capability for Claude chats, which suggests that in-chat document work is becoming a standard feature of general-purpose assistants.
