Google adds more links from AI Search answers to the open web
Google is surfacing sources, pages and news more visibly inside AI Search, making it easier to move from answers to the original web pages.
Google is adding several new ways for Search users to click through from AI answers into the open web, a change aimed at making its AI results more useful for people who need sources, official pages, or related reporting. The company says use of its Preferred Sources feature has grown more than 7x since the start of the year, and it is now surfacing inline links more often and higher in responses. Google is also testing a dedicated top-of-answer section for the right web pages for specific tasks, rolling out more prominent news carousels in more countries and languages, and making end-of-response article links more visual with thumbnails. In video search, it has begun testing clickable creator and publisher names that open Search profiles in AI Mode.
Why it matters
For people using Search, the change means AI answers are less likely to stand alone: sources, specific pages and news results should be easier to spot and open. That matters most when the goal is to verify a claim, reach an official page or follow a related report, rather than stay inside the answer itself.
