Google cuts free Gemini access to Flash-Lite on October 9
Free users will lose Flash and Pro, while some higher-end features move behind paid tiers.
Google is tightening free and lower-tier access to Gemini, and starting October 9 free users will be limited to Gemini Flash-Lite instead of being able to pick Flash or Pro. That matters for developers and heavy Gemini users because Google is also taking Gemini 3.1 Pro away from Google AI Plus, pushing more coding, math, and document-heavy use cases toward the pricier AI Pro tier. Google is adding low, medium, and high effort levels for each model, with higher settings using more of a user's quota in exchange for stronger answers. AI Ultra subscribers will also get Gemini 4 Argon when it reaches the general public, while the model is currently confined to Google's Fairwind Program for governments and trusted partners.
Why it matters
The change narrows what free Gemini users can do and pushes more demanding work toward paid plans. People who rely on Gemini for coding, math or long documents will have fewer model choices unless they pay, while Ultra subscribers will later gain access to Gemini 4 Argon as it opens more widely.
