Google DeepMind, Meta and Isomorphic Labs back Biohub with $300 million
The funding adds to a $1.8 billion push to build AI datasets for biology and support Biohub’s virtual cell work.
Google DeepMind, Meta, and Isomorphic Labs are putting $300 million into Biohub, the nonprofit biomedical research organization backed by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, to build AI datasets for biological research. The money is part of a larger $1.8 billion effort aimed at letting scientists ask and test biology questions digitally, with the goal of improving disease prevention and treatment. Biohub, founded in 2016, is trying to build a “virtual cell” that can be used for simulations. The US Department of Energy will add more than $500 million over five years, and the NIH will provide datasets, repositories, and knowledge bases from earlier federal spending of over $500 million.
Why it matters
The money and federal data contributions give Biohub more of the pieces it needs to turn biology into something scientists can test digitally. That matters because the effort is meant to make research on disease prevention and treatment more data-driven, with datasets and repositories feeding the work rather than isolated projects.
