Google.org backs 17 AI-for-science groups with $36 million

Google.org is putting $36 million behind 17 organizations using AI on scientific problems, with an optional six-month Accelerator that adds engineering help, technical mentorship, and Google infrastructure. The recipients span climate, energy, health, and basic science, including work on flash-flood warnings in Africa, ocean digital twins, fusion modeling, battery design, and AI-driven protein and drug discovery. The program drew applications from 30 countries, showing broad demand for AI-for-science funding. For developers and startups, the main signal is that Google is pairing capital with compute and engineering support for teams that can turn research prototypes into scaled systems.

Why it matters

The award goes beyond cash: selected teams can also get hands-on support to move research tools closer to deployment. That matters most for projects where better warning systems or new scientific methods depend on scaling prototypes into usable systems.
