Google releases EmbeddingGemma 2 for text, code, images, video and audio
It gives developers one embedding model for multiple media types, with smaller and larger configurations for different device limits.
Google has released EmbeddingGemma 2, a compact open-weight multimodal embedding model aimed at faster semantic search and RAG on consumer devices. The model can encode text, code, images, video, and audio into one 768-dimensional space, so developers can search across media types without separate embedding systems. Google says the model can scale from 270 million parameters for text and code up to 740 million for full multimodal support, and it supports Matryoshka Representation Learning to shrink vectors when storage or speed matter. Google also says EmbeddingGemma 2 improves on EmbeddingGemma 1 for code search and technical retrieval, and the model is available on Hugging Face.
Why it matters
This shifts multimodal search and RAG toward a single model that can cover more of the data people actually work with. For teams using consumer hardware, that can reduce the need to stitch together separate embedding systems for different media, while the smaller configurations and truncation support give more room to fit performance and memory constraints.
