Micron's Taoyuan union plans one-day strike over bonus and profit-sharing talks

The stoppage could spread to Micron's largest Taiwan plant, where a union has not yet authorized action and is due in mediation the same day.

Micron workers at its Taoyuan site in Taiwan plan a one-day walkout on October 22 to press for a firm bonus proposal this year and a transparent formula for sharing future profits. Earlier talks broke down in September, and members approved industrial action in early October, though the union says the stoppage is meant to push the company toward a deal rather than end negotiations. The author of the report judges that the impact on output would be small, since fabs can sometimes keep running through a short strike if management has time to prepare. The bigger risk is that Taichung, Micron's largest Taiwan plant, could join, though that union has not authorized a strike and is due in mediation the same day. Any disruption would matter given record demand for DRAM, LPDDR and HBM used in AI hardware.

Why it matters

Taiwan's Micron workers are pressing for a firm bonus and a clear formula for sharing future profits after September talks broke down. The strike is intended to push management toward a deal rather than end negotiations, and the author expects only a negligible dip in output. The larger uncertainty is whether the Taichung workforce joins, since that plant is Micron's biggest in Taiwan and the company's memory chips are in high demand.
