Microsoft and Nvidia launch Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark for Windows PCs
Microsoft’s new AI-focused PCs and Windows 11 features point more work toward local, on-device use.
Microsoft and Nvidia used a San Francisco event to launch RTX Spark hardware for Windows PCs, headlined by the Surface Laptop Ultra and a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box aimed at local AI and developer workflows. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 and ships on October 16, while the Dev Box is up for preorder at $5,999 and is due in November. Microsoft also said Windows 11 is getting new AI-oriented features, including Copilot access to local files and actions, a search bar that can trigger quick commands, and container-based controls for agent security. On the hardware side, Microsoft introduced Magnetic Connect over USB-C, and Nvidia and Microsoft pitched RTX Spark as a platform for running models and workloads on-device rather than always in the cloud. They also previewed DGX Station for Windows as a higher-end deskside system for enterprise AI.
Why it matters
For people using Windows for AI and developer work, the new devices and software features shift more tasks onto the PC itself instead of relying only on cloud services. That gives Microsoft and Nvidia a clearer hardware and software stack for local model use, while Microsoft’s container controls and new Copilot and search features change how those workflows are managed on Windows 11.
