NHTSA reviews Tesla robotaxis over alleged speeding in school zones

The review raises fresh scrutiny of Tesla’s automated ride service as regulators examine whether its robotaxis can exceed posted limits near schools.

U.S. safety regulators are reviewing allegations that Tesla’s robotaxis are exceeding speed limits in active school zones, a potentially serious issue for any company deploying automated ride services at scale. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its Office of Defects Investigation got a petition on September 23, 2026 asking for a probe into 2026 Model Y and Cybercab robotaxis with the Automated Driving System engaged. The complaint says the vehicles can go faster than the posted limit in school zones, and the fleet under scrutiny is described as having about 1,000 robotaxis. The Cybercab is also already under a separate investigation over the absence of side mirrors, pedals and a steering wheel, while Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software is being examined for other traffic violations.

Why it matters

If the allegations are confirmed, the issue goes beyond a single driving error and could affect how safely Tesla can run robotaxis in places where children are present. It also adds to the regulatory pressure already building around the Cybercab and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, widening the focus from one vehicle to the company’s automated driving stack.
