Nintendo says it can secure enough memory for Switch 2 despite price surge

With memory supply judged stable for now, another Switch 2 price rise looks less imminent, though Nintendo has not ruled one out.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa told investors in a quarterly results briefing that the company expects to secure enough memory chips for Switch 2 hardware despite a worldwide surge in memory prices. He said the company's memory situation has not materially changed, so while the shortage has not eased, it has not worsened for Nintendo either. That stance makes another Switch 2 price rise look less imminent, though Nintendo has previously refused to rule one out. The Switch 2 rose from $450 to $500 in the United States in September, a move attributed to higher component costs including RAM. Switch 2 hardware sold 2.67 million units in the quarter, down 32.7 percent from the prior quarter, and analysts point to a thin slate of blockbuster titles as a factor. Software sales rose sharply year over year on both Switch 2 and Switch 1, and Nintendo still plans for 16 million Switch 2 units in its fiscal year.

Why it matters

For buyers, the main question is whether the $500 US price of the Switch 2 holds, and Nintendo's stance on memory points toward that for now without promising it. The company has not ruled out a further increase, so the outlook remains uncertain. Sales slowed sharply in the quarter, yet Nintendo kept its plan of 16 million Switch 2 units for the financial year, which signals it still expects a strong run of demand.
