Tech and AI stocks slump as Democrats take Congress and raise AI oversight fears

Investors are pricing in tighter political scrutiny of AI and data centre build-outs, on top of doubts about whether heavy AI spending will pay off.

Tech shares fell sharply across the US, Europe and Asia after the midterm results, which handed Democrats control of Congress and raised the prospect of tighter oversight of AI. The Nasdaq dropped 5.5% on Thursday, erasing roughly $2.5tn in value, and the seven largest US tech firms collectively lost about $1tn in a single session. Chipmakers took heavy losses, with Nvidia down over 9% and AMD and Micron each off more than 17%. The selling carried into Asia on Friday, when Japan's Nikkei closed 6% lower and South Korea's Kospi ended 6% down. Investors are weighing the political risk to data centre construction alongside longer-running doubts about whether heavy AI spending will pay off.

Why it matters

The sell-off suggests markets now see the midterm result as a real threat to the pace of AI infrastructure investment, not just a short-lived shock. Chipmakers and data centre builders are the most exposed, since they depend most on heavy AI spending. A Texas pledge to pause new data centre construction shows that the political risk is concrete, not hypothetical, and it may shape how and where companies build next. Whether these pressures persist will depend on how much new oversight actually materialises.
