Tolan raises $30M as its AI companion business scales

The new funding gives Tolan more room to grow while its paid app reaches a larger user base and higher recurring revenue.

Tolan raised another $30 million to expand its AI companion business, bringing in Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and Homebrew and pushing its total funding to $60 million. The company says its subscription model now produces annual recurring revenue in the double-digit millions. It also says the app has more than 250,000 active users and has handled over 70 million conversations in the past year. The new money follows a report that valued Tolan above its earlier $120 million mark, with PitchBook putting it at more than $268 million on medium confidence. As the company grows, it faces both tighter competition from newer AI agents and legal scrutiny around AI products that offer emotional support.

Why it matters

The raise suggests Tolan has moved beyond an early-stage product into a business with meaningful recurring revenue and a substantial user base. That matters because the company is now being valued far above its earlier mark, which can change how investors and competitors view its position. It also puts a price on a category of AI products that rely on ongoing user trust and engagement.
