Windows Server 2025 gains Quick Machine Recovery for failed boots

Admins will be able to fix severe boot failures through Windows Update, with cloud fixes needing to be enabled first on Server 2025.

Microsoft has extended Quick Machine Recovery to Windows Server 2025, giving administrators a way to repair serious boot failures through Windows Update without touching the machine directly, but only after applying the October 2026 security update. The feature drops the server into WinRE, collects crash data, and can pull cloud or local remediation packages to fix bad drivers, updates, or configuration changes. On Server 2025, cloud remediation is off by default, so admins have to turn it on through Group Policy if they want Microsoft-supplied fixes. Microsoft first announced QMR in November 2024 after the CrowdStrike outage, then started Insider testing in March 2025 and later added a faster single-scan mode in November.

Why it matters

This changes recovery for servers that fail to boot far enough for normal administration. Instead of needing direct access, admins can use Windows Update to push remediation, which should make severe boot incidents easier to handle remotely. On Server 2025, though, Microsoft-supplied cloud remediation is off by default, so teams that want it will still need to turn it on in Group Policy.
