AMD extends FSR 4.1.2 upscaling to Xbox consoles and handhelds

Developers can now enable the upscaler on Xbox Series X and S, with handheld support arriving first through Asus' preview driver.

AMD has extended its FSR 4.1.2 upscaling to Xbox Series X and S and to Xbox handhelds, letting developers enable it in their games. The update to the Game Development Kit adds two INT8 models for the consoles: a Full model and a Lite model that is half the size and costs less to run. Either console can use either model, and the choice is a performance trade-off rather than a memory one, since upscaler memory depends on resolution. On handhelds, support currently covers only the efficient INT8 model and arrives first through Asus' preview driver for the ROG Xbox Ally X and X20, with the broader ROG Xbox Ally range following in a later update. The timing matters because Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on Xbox on November 19, and upscaling could help older hardware cope with it.

Why it matters

For players on Xbox hardware, upscaling offers a way to run demanding games at lower internal resolutions while keeping image quality reasonable. Because both consoles can use either the Full or the Lite model, the choice is about performance rather than memory, so the trade-off is set by how much processing power a given game and device can spare. Handheld owners will get the efficient model first, with the wider ROG Xbox Ally range following later. With Grand Theft Auto 6 due on Xbox on November 19, the update lands at a time when older hardware may need the extra headroom.
