Google Home Speakers are pulling huge amounts of background data
Google says a fix is rolling out for affected speakers, after reports of failed firmware downloads sent some devices past 200GB a day.
Some Google Home Speaker owners are seeing their devices pull down unusually large amounts of background data, in some cases more than 200GB per day, which could quickly burn through capped internet plans. Reports from 9to5Google and Reddit suggest the problem may come from failed firmware-update downloads rather than normal use. Google says it already has a fix rolling out to affected users. Most complaints involve the newer Google Home Speaker model, although Google has not yet said how broad the issue is.
Why it matters
For owners on capped internet plans, the issue can turn a speaker into an unexpected source of heavy data use, even when it is not being actively used. The reports are concentrated on the newer Google Home Speaker model, and Google says the fix is already reaching affected users, which should reduce the risk for people seeing the problem now.
