Google is testing Gemini desktop control on Mac

The preview could let Gemini act across files and apps on macOS, while still asking before sensitive actions.

Google is testing a Mac desktop-control mode for Gemini that could let the assistant work across local files, apps, and websites, which would make it much more useful for automation but also much more sensitive from a security and privacy standpoint. Hidden interface text suggests users may be able to grant broader sandbox access so Gemini can read, create, modify, or delete files beyond the folders they connected manually. The same preview points to app-level control in places like Mail, Safari, and Messages, while still requiring confirmation for risky actions such as purchases, money transfers, account creation, legal approvals, and edits to sensitive personal data. The feature is not yet available publicly, Google has not announced it, and it is unclear when it will ship or which model will power it.

Why it matters

If Google ships this, Gemini would move from answering prompts to handling more of a Mac user’s day-to-day work. That makes the assistant more useful, but it also raises the stakes for file access and actions inside apps, especially where confirmation is still required for sensitive steps.
