Pentagon launches Project Meridian with Musk, Luckey and Gingrich
Project Meridian gives a new team 120 days to recommend what military technologies the Pentagon should pursue next.
The Pentagon has launched Project Meridian, a 120-day effort to examine how future wars may be fought and what technologies the military should build and field next. Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are set to co-lead the work, which Defense Department CTO Emil Michael will oversee. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also announced an Autonomous Warfare Command to accelerate autonomous systems and drone development and deployment. The project is meant to end with findings and actionable proposals for advancing military technology, though the Pentagon did not say who the partner organization is that will handle the study.
Why it matters
The effort puts outside figures in a role that will help shape near-term military technology priorities, not just review them. Its results could steer what the Pentagon chooses to build and field next, while the new Autonomous Warfare Command signals faster movement on autonomous systems and drones.
