Perplexity lets Mac subscribers run Computer locally
The update keeps AI workflows on-device for eligible Macs, giving subscribers more control over private data and model spend.
Perplexity has updated its Mac Computer app so subscribers can run the full AI workflow locally instead of sending everything to the cloud, which matters for privacy, cost control and offline-heavy Mac workflows. The local mode requires a recent Apple Silicon Mac with at least 36GB of RAM. Users can start with either Qwen 3.6 or Perplexity's PPLX Pro model, and the app can still escalate to more than 15 frontier models when needed. Perplexity says the same sandboxing and security controls used in the cloud version still apply, and Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers can use the local mode starting today.
Why it matters
For people using Perplexity on a recent Apple Silicon Mac with enough memory, the Computer workflow no longer has to leave the device. That shifts more sensitive work onto the user’s machine while still leaving access to higher-end models when a task needs them, and it opens the local mode to Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers now.
