Google widens AMIE healthcare studies to prepare patients before doctor visits

Google says the research system could collect history upfront and leave doctors with a clearer handoff and more time for care decisions.

Google says its AMIE healthcare research project is being extended into broader studies aimed at making doctor visits more efficient by collecting patient history before the appointment and handing physicians a concise handoff. The team says the system is more detailed than a standard intake form because it asks targeted follow-up questions, which can leave more appointment time for diagnosis and treatment decisions. In the reported study, participants could chat with AMIE before seeing their doctor, and a trained physician monitored each interaction without needing to step in. Google now wants to test AMIE at larger scale across the US and add richer interaction modes, including video and spoken conversation.

Why it matters

If the follow-up studies hold up, the main change is for appointment time: doctors could start with a fuller patient history and spend less of the visit on basic intake. That shifts the work of first contact toward AMIE while keeping a physician in the loop, which is what Google now wants to test at larger scale across the US.
