Micron pauses Taoyuan fab construction as profit-sharing talks with union stall

With the Fab 11E site nearly idle, the outcome of the November 6 meeting will decide when building resumes.

Micron has largely halted work on its Fab 11E construction site in Taoyuan, Taiwan, while it and the local union remain deadlocked over profit-sharing terms, according to Bloomberg. Only minor safety tasks are continuing, and the company has told local officials about the suspension without issuing a public statement. The stoppage comes as the union holds out for better pay, having already staged a one-day strike last month, and as the two sides prepare to meet again on November 6. The dispute mirrors wider labour unrest at Samsung and SK hynix, where workers are pressing for a share of the profits from the AI memory boom. Micron says its operations in Taiwan continue normally and that it expects to reach an agreement with its workers.

Why it matters

For workers at Micron and peer chipmakers in Taiwan, the dispute tests whether profits from the AI memory boom will be shared through bargaining rather than through strikes. Micron says its Taiwan operations continue as normal, so the immediate effect falls on the construction schedule at Fab 11E and on the pace at which the union's demands are settled. Until the two sides meet again, the disagreement remains open at a site that has almost stopped work.
