Ukrainian operator of OnlyFake pleads guilty over AI-made fake IDs

The service showed how cheaply a convincing fake ID photo could be made, weakening checks that banks and other firms depend on.

Yuriy Nazarenko, a Ukrainian who once forged passports by hand in Photoshop, built a website called OnlyFake that automated the production of counterfeit identity documents and later added generative AI to it. The service let buyers produce realistic photos of fake driver's licenses, passports and Social Security cards for about $15 each, which undermined the know-your-customer checks that financial firms rely on. Nazarenko later pleaded guilty, and the Department of Justice said the operation brought in more than $1 million. The account in 404 Media is based on interviews with Nazarenko, his lawyer, court records and the outlet's own reporting.

Why it matters

For anyone who follows online identity checks, the case shows that a photo of a fake document could be produced for a few dollars, which made the verification steps used by financial firms easier to get past. Nazarenko's guilty plea and the reported profits of more than a million dollars show the scale of demand for such documents. The episode points to identity verification as a weak point that automated tools can exploit.
