Uber and Pony.ai plan London robotaxi tests
The London trial extends Uber’s multi-partner autonomous vehicle push in Europe and could feed into wider deployment plans.
Uber and Pony.ai said they plan to start testing Gen-7 robotaxis in London in the coming weeks, marking another step in Uber’s push to build a multi-partner autonomous vehicle network in Europe. The London effort is part of a broader expansion of the Uber-Pony.ai relationship, which began in May 2025 and already includes plans for 2,000 robotaxis in Europe, starting with Zagreb. Uber has also backed British self-driving startup Wayve, which raised $1.2 billion in February 2026 with the round potentially reaching $1.5 billion if Uber adds another $300 million tied to London robotaxi deployment. Uber expects AV rides in as many as 15 cities worldwide by the end of 2026, and the company says it is pursuing similar partnerships in other markets such as Dubai.
Why it matters
For London, the move is another sign that driverless car testing is shifting from isolated pilots toward larger cross-border rollouts. It also shows Uber using partnerships to widen where AV rides may appear, with London linked to plans that already include Europe-wide deployment and a broader global target by the end of 2026.
