Drone strike shuts Yandex data center and disrupts cloud services in Russia
Yandex told customers to switch zones after the Sasovo site went offline and services across its cloud and consumer products were hit.
A Ukrainian drone strike hit Yandex’s data center in Sasovo, Russia, forcing the site offline and disrupting Yandex Cloud and a wide set of Russian services. The facility is said to host two of Yandex’s three AI-training supercomputers, Chervonenkis and Lyapunov, but Yandex has not said whether they were damaged. The outage reportedly affected Yandex Mail, Disk, Documents, Pay and Market, along with outside customers including Cian, Russian Railways, T-Bank, Ozon and Wildberries. The incident matters because it may have knocked out a chunk of Russia’s AI and cloud capacity at a time when sanctions already limit access to advanced hardware.
Why it matters
The outage reached beyond one data center because it affected Yandex Cloud and several widely used Yandex services, with spillover into corporate systems at T-Bank, Ozon and Wildberries. If the reported supercomputer site is part of the disruption, the blast radius extends into Yandex’s AI infrastructure as well as its hosting services, leaving customers with less capacity and fewer working options while the site stays down.
