Yandex data center attacks leave cloud customers without a clear recovery timeline

Yandex says its setup is unstable after drone strikes damaged three data centers, and it is telling customers to rely on other disaster-recovery plans.

Yandex says drone attacks damaged three of its data centers, forcing two sites offline and leaving a third degraded, which has disrupted cloud access for customers. The company identified the affected facilities as Sasovo, Kaluga and Vladimir, hit on October 8, October 9 and October 11. Yandex has warned customers that its current setup is unstable and says there is no dependable timetable for restoring service, so it is urging people to use other disaster-recovery infrastructure. The outages have affected core services including cloud storage and parts of its platform, while Yandex says it has not reported injuries and has not said whether any stored data was lost permanently.

Why it matters

The disruption affects customers that depend on Yandex cloud services and other parts of its platform, because two sites are down and the company says it cannot say when service will be fully restored. That leaves users with no dependable timeline for recovery and forces them to fall back on their own backup arrangements while Yandex works through the damage.
