Housing Ombudsman investigates security incident after case system disruption
New complaints are paused while the service checks what happened and whether any data was affected.
The U.K. Housing Ombudsman Service says a third-party security incident has disrupted its case management system, preventing new complaints from being filed until services are restored. It says the event is contained, that it is working with its supplier to determine what happened and whether any personal information was affected, and that it has notified the Information Commissioner's Office. The watchdog has told tenants and leaseholders to be cautious about unsolicited messages and to avoid sharing personal data unless they are sure who is asking. It is also directing people who need to open new complaints to contact it by phone or email while recovery continues.
Why it matters
For social housing residents, the immediate change is simple: new complaints cannot be filed through the usual system until recovery is complete, so the watchdog is pushing people to use phone or email instead. The service is also still checking the extent of any data involved and has alerted the ICO, which means the incident is now being handled as both an operational outage and a potential data issue. Residents are being told to stay cautious about unexpected messages while that work continues.
