Instagram Edits Gains a Desktop App on macOS With AI Agent Support

The standalone editor adds a full timeline, 4K export and an MCP link for AI agents, though it is macOS-only and projects cannot yet move between mobile and desktop.

Instagram has released a standalone desktop version of its Edits video editor for macOS, a year after the app first launched on mobile. The desktop app adds a full multi-track timeline, precise audio waveforms, color grading, keyboard shortcuts, and support for multiple aspect ratios with watermark-free 4K export. Its headline feature is an MCP interface that lets users connect an AI agent of their choice, such as Meta's Muse, to perform tool calls like assembling a rough cut that can then be finished by hand. Users can move between agentic and manual editing, and projects keep Instagram audio library access and direct publishing. For now the app is macOS-only, projects cannot yet be shared between mobile and desktop, and Meta says it will ship updates weekly.

Why it matters

For people who make short-form video on Instagram, the desktop app moves editing from phone to computer, with a timeline and colour grading that the mobile app lacked. The MCP interface means an AI agent can assemble a rough cut that the user then finishes by hand. Until projects sync between mobile and desktop and the app reaches Windows or Linux, the desktop version serves Mac users working on larger edits rather than a single workflow for everyone.
